About the Raiders

• Head coach: Josh McDaniels (second season)
• General manager: Dave Ziegler
• Last year’s record: 6-11

After going all-in with the acquisitions of Davante Adams and Chandler Jones last year, the Raiders stumbled their way to a disappointing 2022 season and were exposed to be a team with a deeply-flawed roster. McDaniels, Zieglers and owner Mark Davis made the decision to move on from quarterback Derek Carr, their nine-year starter. While the Raiders addressed their quarterback hole by signing Jimmy Garoppolo, a series of less-than-inspiring moves so far in free agency have left them in a state where the offense line and all three levels of the defense remain problem areas. It’s hard to feel good about where they stand right now.

Raiders’ key position needs

Cornerback: Nate Hobbs is the only corner on the roster who’s shown he can be a viable full-time starter. He’s best off at nickelback and struggled last season when asked to play outside more frequently, so the Raiders would be doing themselves an injustice if they don’t add a couple of outside corners.

Defensive line: Bilal Nichols and Jerry Tillery would likely be the two starting defensive tackles with the roster as currently constructed. Nichols was a solid run defender last season, but he offered almost nothing as a pass rusher. And although Tillery flashed as a pass rusher, he’s a liability as a run defender. The Raiders need at least one starting-caliber player here.

Offensive tackle: The Raiders re-signed Brandon Parker and Jermaine Eluemunor. It’s already a three-man race for the right tackle job between them and Thayer Munford Jr., but none of those players have shown enough to pass up adding a rookie in the draft if the right prospect is available.

Linebacker: Divine Deablo, Robert Spillane and Luke Masterson are the top three linebackers on the roster right now. They’ll all be 27 years or younger when the season starts and could theoretically have long-term upside, but the Raiders need to at least add a rotational linebacker.

Edge rusher: Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones are locks as the two starting edge rushers, but the Raiders don’t have much depth behind them. Plus, Jones is 33 and coming off a bad season and a major injury, so it’s time to start exploring potential replacements to be prepared even if does have a rebound campaign in 2023.

Raiders will draft a tight end, but which one?:  Tafur offers options for each round.

Defensive overhaul will take time: Raiders expect to need “more than one draft” to improve 20 years of struggles.

What we learned at the NFL combine: The Raiders need to vastly improve their defense and having a strong defensive line is the first objective.

Raiders still have to draft a QB: Tafur says signing Jimmy Garoppolo doesn’t change Las Vegas’ need to add a young QB.

Raiders’ last five top picks

2022: OL Dylan Parham, pick No. 90 — Ziegler’s first draft pick got off to a pretty good start. Parham started all 17 games while making appearances at left guard, center and right guard and played at a solid level. He’ll likely remain at guard this season because Andre James is still on the roster, but the Raiders believe he could be their center of the future.

2021: OL Alex Leatherwood, pick No. 17 — This was a disaster. Leatherwood was drafted to start at right tackle, but was awful and had to move to right guard as a rookie. He tried to transition back to right tackle in his second training camp, but the Raiders’ brass was so unimpressed that they cut him and he was claimed on waivers by the Bears.

2020: WR Henry Ruggs III, pick No. 12 — The Raiders released Ruggs in 2021 after he was involved in car crash that killed a woman and her dog and led to multiple felony charges for DUI resulting in death and reckless driving. He continues to await trial in Las Vegas. There’s no need to talk about football here.

2019: DE Clelin Ferrell, pick No. 4 — It probably isn’t an overstatement to call this one of the all-time NFL Draft busts in recent memory. You just don’t draft run-stopping, rotational edge rushers with the No. 4 pick. He recently signed a modest free-agent contract with the 49ers.

2018: OT Kolton Miller, pick No. 15 — While he’s not spectacular, Miller has turned out to be a quality starting left tackle who almost never misses games. He’s one of the few first-round picks by the Raiders that have turned out well as of late.
